Management and Treatment Options

However, true volvulus requires emergency surgery.   • Use a slow-feeder bowl if your dog tends to gulp food quickly

Owners should be prepared for this to be one of the more expensive emergency procedures in veterinary medicine, and pet insurance with adequate cover is worth considering given the breed's known predisposition.

Prognosis depends heavily on how quickly the dog was treated and whether the stomach or spleen suffered tissue death before surgery. Dogs treated early, before significant shock or organ compromise, generally have a good chance of a full recovery with gastropexy protecting against recurrence. Dogs presenting later, in more advanced shock, face a more guarded outlook. This variability underlines why prompt recognition of symptoms and immediate veterinary attention are the most powerful tools an owner has.
