the Netherlands's animal shelters, rescue associations and refuges save thousands of dogs, cats and other animals every year, almost always on tiny budgets and volunteer power. To build the most objective ranking possible, we analysed public Google reviews across more than 56 registered animal-protection organisations in the Netherlands and scored them by a transparent, review-weighted method. The 49 organisations below are the highest-ranked, together holding 8,100 Google reviews.
Our methodology — how we ranked them
We did not pick favourites. Each organisation received a score using a Bayesian weighting of its Google rating and its number of reviews — the same statistical approach used for film and product rankings. This rewards shelters that combine a high rating with a large, credible volume of reviews, and prevents a shelter with a single 5-star review from outranking one with hundreds of genuine reviews. We considered only registered animal-protection organisations, shelters and rescue associations — not boarding kennels, grooming salons, or veterinary clinics.

- Verified type — registered as an animal-protection or rescue organisation
