Costs can escalate quickly, so many owners find pet insurance with good spinal and neurological cover invaluable, ideally taken out while the dog is young and healthy, before any signs of back problems appear.

Prognosis varies considerably depending on severity and how quickly treatment is sought. Dogs treated promptly, especially those who still have pain sensation in their back legs, generally have a good chance of a favourable recovery.
