Why Dogs Need Protein
Protein provides amino acids essential for muscle maintenance, immune function, coat health, and enzyme production. Dogs require 22 amino acids — 10 are essential and must come from food.
Animal vs Plant Protein
Animal proteins (chicken, beef, fish, eggs) have higher biological availability for dogs than plant proteins (soy, pea protein). This means a higher proportion is actually absorbed and used.
Best Protein Sources
- Chicken and turkey: highly digestible, good amino acid profile
- Beef: high in iron and zinc, good palatability
- Fish (salmon, sardines): excellent protein plus omega-3 fatty acids
- Eggs: one of the most bioavailable proteins available
- Lamb: good for dogs with chicken or beef sensitivities
Novel Proteins for Allergies
Dogs with food allergies need novel proteins they haven't been exposed to: venison, kangaroo, duck, rabbit, or insect protein.
How Much Protein?
Adult dogs need a minimum of 18% protein (dry matter basis). Working dogs and puppies need more. Senior dogs without kidney disease also benefit from higher protein to maintain muscle mass.
