Our methodology — how we ranked them
Spain's animal shelters and rescue organisations — the protectoras — save tens of thousands of dogs, cats, galgos, donkeys and other animals every year, almost always on tiny budgets and volunteer power. To build the most objective ranking possible, we analysed nearly 50,000 public Google reviews across more than 200 registered animal-protection organisations in Spain. We did not just look at the average star rating: we weighted each organisation by its review volume and analysed the full distribution of ratings, so that shelters with a meaningful share of poor reviews are penalised, not just rewarded for a high headline score. The 50 organisations below are the highest-ranked, together holding 17,951 of those reviews.
Our methodology — how we ranked them
We did not pick favourites. Each organisation received a score using a Bayesian weighting of its Google rating and its number of reviews — the same statistical approach used for film and product rankings — combined with a penalty for the share of 1- and 2-star reviews. This rewards shelters that combine a high rating with a large, credible volume of reviews, prevents a single 5-star review from outranking thousands of genuine 4.7-star reviews, and pushes down organisations with a pattern of serious complaints. We considered only registered animal-protection organisations, shelters, and rescue associations — not boarding kennels, grooming salons, or wildlife parks.
- Rating — the organisation's average Google star rating
- Review volume — how many people have actually rated them (credibility)
- Negative-review share — the proportion of 1- and 2-star reviews, which lowers the score
- Verified type — registered as an animal-protection or rescue organisation

What makes a good animal shelter?
Analysing thousands of reviews across these organisations, the same themes appear again and again in what people praise — and what they miss. If you are choosing where to adopt, foster, donate, or volunteer, these are the marks of a strong shelter:
- A serious adoption process — home checks, follow-up, and honest matching, not "first come first served".
- Transparent animal health — animals given with vaccinations, microchip, sterilisation, and deworming up to date.
- Cleanliness and visible care — clean facilities and animals that are clearly well looked after.
- Engaged volunteers and staff — friendliness, patience, and genuine dedication.
- Post-adoption support — the best organisations stay reachable after you take an animal home.
How to support these organisations
- Adopt, don't shop — every organisation here has animals waiting for a home
- Foster — temporary homes free up shelter space and save lives
- Donate or sponsor — even small monthly amounts keep shelters running
- Volunteer — walking dogs, socialising cats, transport, photography, admin
