Neutering is one of the most common procedures in veterinary practice — but timing matters.

Benefits

  • Eliminates testicular cancer risk in males
  • Dramatically reduces pyometra risk in females
  • Prevents mammary tumours if done before second season
  • Prevents unwanted litters

Risks and Considerations

  • Increased orthopaedic risk in large breeds if neutered too early
  • Weight gain post-procedure
  • Possible urinary incontinence in some females

Timing

Traditional advice: 6 months. Current evidence suggests large breeds may benefit from waiting until physical maturity (12-18 months) before neutering.

Yorkshire Terrier Kollabierender Luftröhre: Ursachen, Symptome & Pflege
